One Book, One City for Kids is an annual reading program that encourages all 5th graders in the city to read and discuss the same book. The program also strives to encourage a lifelong love of reading among students, to inspire readers to bring story ideas and themes to life through discussion, and to build collaborative ties between public libraries, school libraries, and area schools. This year the entire city will be reading "Front Desk" by Kelly Yang.

Chapter 15 - Life
Mia’s mom says that “we’re
immigrants...Our lives are never fair.” What are some of the ways that
statement is proven true in the book? (Chapter 15)
Some ways in this book is when Mr. Yao wouldn't pay for things when they broke. Like when the washing machine broke Mr. Yao wouldn't pay for it even though he had the money and Mia's parents didn't. It was also unfair when Lorenzs' car was stolen and just because Hank is black he was interigated! It also wasn't fair that Hank got fired from his job because the police were talking with his boss. Overall I hink Mr. Yao is the unfairness.
1.They only had $200.(witch they call it poor) 2.They cant aford anything much. 3.They are not reallylike a amarican.(something like they can't master being amarican)
Thanks right they didn't get all of the money promised by Mr. Yao. Mia family had to pay for the washing machine even though they did not break it. They have to live in a tiny room.
A good employee just does what it's told. so if the manager tells the employee do this but the manager messes up and tell him the wrong thing it's not the employee.
In the story the immigrant characters experience a lot of difficulties like not having enough money to buy something or having to share a burger with somebody else.geting a white and white sandwich and not being able to get protection. Protection like a security camera are bulletproof glass windows.
I think the reason Mia’s mom says “We’re imagrants our life is never fair” is correct we were given proof by uncle Lee’s white on white sandwich and the way how Mia is treated at her school in general.
Mia's mom says that were immigrants our lives will never fair that is proven true because people in Mia's school they look at her with disgust, and with Mr.Yao he treats Mia's mom badly and is taking advantage of her.
Mr. Yao was treating Mia's family unfairly and when they stood up up themselves Mr. Yao said that they were immigrants and that there were plenty of other immigrants that would take their spot.
There kinda low on money, and food. Also Mrs. Tang means when they moved to America they got Mia in a school she gets bullied with Lupe, so she might think and said that life isn't fair.
Mia and her dad are talking about a penny how much its worth one is 40'000 dollers or more and there is only 40 made some that are 30 dollers if its 2 letters in mistake
The reason Mia's mom said we are immigrants was because they were low on food low on their job and they already have a boss that treats them like trash.So this is why I think Mia's mom said that.
Mia's mom says that a immigrants life is not fair which is proven right when Mr. Yao says "you know how many other immigrants would like to have your job".Also Mia says they came with 200 dollars to America.
Being a immigrant is unfair because you have no rights and you have no defence and also you can be homeless and have no rights and for the immigrant they see things different like places,language,skin and racism and in my opinion i think these things need to change for good and then immigrants won't have to worry.
They have no rights because they come from a different place,skin color and they also have to worry about voting getting a job because it may be hard and a license and also there are people out there that are racism they also speak a diffrent language but we are all the same but people from different countrys and they get judged alot so yea but lie i said we are all the same so we should all get treated the same and this is why i think she said that
One way this is proven to be true is that Mr.yao doesn't give them the money he said he would. The reason this is happening is because their immigrants and Mr.yao know's they are poor and need money so he is taking advantage of them because he knows they will take anything.

When Mia mom said 'We're immigrants' she meant people lives are fair or there not the same as other people because you never know what someone is going through.
Mia and her family let immigrants stay in the back of the motel because they immigrated and did not have enough money and not enough food to buy, so thats why i think Mai's mom said that.

The reason the mom says our lives are never fair is because everywhere they go they get treated disrespectfully.On chapter 15 page 67-68 it says why cant we just tell him he has to get us some security cameras or else.Because he knows there is no or else .Its so unfair mom walked over and said,¨ Our lives are never fair because we are immigrants.¨
They say this because life isn't fair and here is an example its not fair that Mia can't have a big house but other people can. I get that stuff costs money but its still n ot fair.
Life is not fair for Mia because at school they bully her and Jason is so mean to Mia when Mia never do noting bad to him and Mr. Yao is mean to Mia and her family and Mia life is so hard because she never get a home and it so sad because people will bully her just because she works at the motel and because she is the manager of the motel. Like why will they bully her what if they works at the motel and they were the manager of the motel and just because there are immigrant and that not fair at all.
They said in the beginning "Whoah Thats alot of money just for 1 burger!" Its obviuos that they have never been to america because stuff from America doesn't come cheap....
The thing that change in there friendship is that they told each other what they were lieng about and case they new something no one else new they were about to talk about is together and it brought them together
What Lupe was trying to say is its not fare the thing i would change is how rich people act they should be nicer too poor people and think there better then them think there are better then them case they are not even if they have money and are famous and pretty they should not be mean to poor people and its most likely that poor people are nicer then rich case rich people don't have any idea of the strugle poor people go though.
i think she enter so then they can make as much money as Mir.Yao in a moth then not having money and they would treat the people better then him so she really wanted the money for her family and so they don't have to work for hours and hours at the motel and they can have a good life in Amarica.
People from different states immigrants are treat different kinda like slaver and black people sometimes get treat different at stores or a restaurants

I went back in the book and found , Mr Yao treats them bad, he doesn't wanna buy security cameras for the motel, She only had little bit of money for only one burger, that shows that they had never been to america , stuff in america aren't cheap, and her parents told her America would be an amazing place, so far she was living in her car with the ac not working, and them not having enough money

Its hard being an immigrant and trying to get money to live a normal life like other's,it's just Mia is working very hard to get that money for her mom and dad.
Because just like any race other than caucasian will get judged because of there skin color or the way they look (take the chinaeas eye stereotype for example) and i know everyone has it hard with looks because no one is perfect,but POC have it worse

ReplyDeleteMia and her family let immigrants stay in the back of the motel because they immigrated and did not have enough money and not enough food to buy, so thats why i think Mai's mom said that.

the reason mias mom said that is because when u are from a different place people have there own opinions about u and where u came from. for a example if u came from Africa people will see u as they see on movies or the internet like say i came from africa in most movies africa is poor and has no water and they live in the wild but that is not true africa has water and everything other places have so when u move from some where things are not the same and people will see u how they see how u live on tv so its not gonna be fair.

ReplyDeleteI thin what mia mom had meant when she said their immigrants and there lives are never fair,I think she meant because of there skin color they mever get treated fairly because there Chinese people and they dont know everything but that didn't mia from doing everything that she is doing now.Mia mom isn't really supporting her from trying learn English just because she is from china and she think that math is the only thing mia should be learing even tho she is very start at math:)
