One Book, One City for Kids is an annual reading program that encourages all 5th graders in the city to read and discuss the same book. The program also strives to encourage a lifelong love of reading among students, to inspire readers to bring story ideas and themes to life through discussion, and to build collaborative ties between public libraries, school libraries, and area schools. This year the entire city will be reading "Front Desk" by Kelly Yang.

Chapter 8 - Weird
When Mia’s teacher asks all the students
to introduce themselves by sharing something “weird,” why does Mia decide not
to talk about living and working in a motel? (Chapter 8)
I think she decided not to because she thought the kids would be jealous. I think it could also be because they might laugh at her. I think because it was mostly white kids and most of them had big houses. I think it was also because she thought they might make fun of her. It could also be that she thought they wouldn't beleive her.
She didn't talk about the motel because,they wouldn't understand cause their just kids and they maybe will think differently then her and say "all she does it work that's stupid." Maybe.
I think she decided not talk to them about the motel because Jason told her not to tell them about the motel and because she might be afraid that the kids will bully her and think that she is extra different from everyone else because she lives in a motel. People think differently from other people. So the kids may think living in a motel is "weird" but Mia thinks that living in a motel is really cool and is good to work at. People may think differently then you do. But it's part of life.

because Jason told her not to and kids can bully her because she lives in motel she has no dog and she also works in a motel so kids can say"shes lives in a motel she might be poor" or"shes Asian she doesn't know how to speak English well" and with mr.yao and Jason being rude and also having to work for a long time they could get fired.

Mia might've decide not to talk about living and working in a motel because shes not american and because of that the other kids might think shes poor because she works, She also didn't say anything about working at a hotel because Jason gave her that "Don't you dare look" and so she didn't tell them.
Because after she was gonna say motel hotel a boy came in and Mia saw him and it was Jason and the teacher said so wat were you gonna say the mia say oh nothing then the teacher asked again the she was about to say mote the Jason stop her and wated for Rces and then told Mia to not said we’re she works and lives.
Mia stopped because of jayson .he walked in late and stared at Mia and Mia saw that stare as like if he did not want then to know about what she was about to say.
When Jason Yao enters the classroom, Mia decides not to tell that she works in a motel, because she works for Jason's father, Mr.Yao. If she said it, kids will make fun of Jason and Mia.
Mia decides not to share about her living and working in a motel because Mr. Yao's son Jason gave Mia a glare, that seemed that he didn't want her to talk about the motel, so she lied instead.

She didn't say anything about the hotel because Jason shot her a look like say nothing. Even though she wanted to talk about the hotel she new that Jason could tell his dad and she new his dad might not be happy.
Page 39/40- Mia decides to not talk about living and working in a motel because even though she was about to, Jason changed Mia's emotions by making her cheeks hot. Another reason is that Jason gave her the "don't you dare look" on page 40, meaning "don't you do it". So that made her feel that she couldn't talk about her living situations.
Mia decides to talk about how growing up in china and how they lived down there,so she can tell people how its like living in china and how u will learn.
when Jason came in because if she told the class Jason will tell them what happened at the Motel and the hole class will laugh at her ,because she didn't really own the motel.
she did not wont to say she work at a motel because jason walk in the class and he look at her. Because her and jason know each other, jason doesn't want to be the weird one.
because she found out that she was in the same classroom as Jason and Jason told her not to say anything and especially she sits next to him. But the thing is why dont Jason want her tell?
I think Mia was proud to work in a motel unlike LIVING in one because maybe she feared being picked on by her peers because she didn't live in a ''common'' living place like an apartment or a house.
The only reason she didn't tell the kids in her class room that she worked at hotel is because Jason walked in her class and if she told them then he would tell his dad and then Mia and her parents would get fired.
Mia did not want to talk about that she worked and a motel because jason walked in the classroom and jason would get mad at her because Mia said that she worked in a motel and jason would get embarased

Mia didn't say anything beacause Jason was staring at her and was doing don't you dare look so then Mia didn't say anything she said i work and live in a normal house with a dog .
Since they might think Jason is weird since the dad owns the motel and Mia and her mom and dad lives in that motel.Then he also dose´nt want the bullies to pick on Mia to.
I don't think Mia said anything because whatever she was about to say could potentially embarrass her or Jason, and Jason gave her the trademark stare do not say anything.
The reason Mia didn't talk about the motel was because Jason came in and she didn't want everybody to know that she worked for Jasonś dad. Also in the text it says ¨Hi Im Mia and as soon as she was about to say Motel Jason burst through the doors and says sorry Im sorry¨
The reason why Mia did not talk about her living and working in the motel because Jayson walks in and gives a look trying to tell her not to tell them about her living and working in a motel.
I think that she didn´t want to say she worked and lived in a motel because then everyone in her class would think she was poor and she was the new kid so she still needed to make friends.
Im not realy sure if this s right but i think the reason she didn't share is because she thinks Jason is gonna get mad at her and he doesn't want people to know they know each other🙂.

when mia move to amurie mia had to go to school but mia and her mom had to go there to sgin in then when they was done mia and there mom and dad was trying to find a job there frist job a was like a resturant and there 2 jab was a motle.
I think that Mia didnt want to talk about her working at the moltel because she was shy and embarrasssed and Jason was going to get mad and tell his dad.
She was a little embarrased case she didn't have a real house also case Jason is in her class and i think she was scared case he could tell his dad and get her and he parents introble

She was going to tell the class that sh lives and works in a motel but right then Jason walked into the classroom so she only got to get to I live and work in a Jason sat down next to her because it was the only spot open in the classroom and that Jason gave a don't you dare look at Mia and then Mia lied to the class and she said that she lived and worked with a golden retriver and she said that because that was the first dog to pop into her mind she said it was golden and its name was Sonjay.
I think my class read the page when Jason says " Mia, I like you " and Mia is like "I DON"T LIKE YOU, JASON " But that proves that Jason will be emberresd for later days. Ugh, my english wrting is bad on the chromebook!!
Mia thinks that it is weird that she works at the motel because Jason told her not to tell anyone that she works and lives at the motel. She thinks it will be a LOT harder to make friends.
I think that Mia did not say that she work at the motel because I think that they will laugh because she is the manager and because They will say mean stuff to her. Jason will be so mean to her and laugh just because she works at the motel so that why maybe she did not say that she works at the motel and she is the manager. Jason give her that look so she will not say that she is the manager.

The teacher asked them about something wierd and Mia was about to say that she worked and lived at a motel. Just then, Jason Yao walked in and sat next to Mia. She then was about to say it again when Jason gave Mia that look of, "don't you dare", so she lied and said something else. Makes me wonder what he's hiding.
Mia decided that she wanted to talk about living and working in a motel but Jason walked in and Mia lied and didn't talk about living and working in a motel. Also Jason didn't want Mia talking about the motel for some reason.
Because when Jason walks in Mia probably thinks that Jason will say "HEY THAT'S A LIE I LIVE THERE AND SHE DOES A REALLY BAD JOB OF TAKING CARE OF THE HOTEL!!!"
Mia didn't say she worked in a motel because when she was about to say it Jason walked in and did the don’t you dare look. So Mia didn't say she worked at a motel. That is why Mia decided not to say she worked at a motel.
I think that Mia decides not to talk about living and working in a motel for two reasons. The first reason is that she probably thought that she would have a hard time making friends if she said that. The second reason is that Jason Yao gave her a look that meant don’t you dare tell anyone about that.
I think that she decided not to say that she lived and worked in a motel because when she was about to say that she lived and worked in a motel Jason walked in. When he walked in he had to sit at the only other desk which is right next to her desk. Then he gave her the “don’t you dare stare” so then she lied and said she had a dog. Another reason is that a lot of the people at her school have nice houses but her family doesn't have the money so they have to live in a motel for free.
Why Mia decided not to talk about living in a motel is because Jason Yao gave Mia a don't you dare look that makes me think that he did not want her to talk about living in a motel because Jason's dad owns the motel.
I think mia didn’t say she worked and lived in a motel because Jason was giving her the eye of *don’t you do it*. Another reason I think she didn’t say it is because Jason might say *she thinks she is good at the job*. One more reason I think she didn’t say it is people would giggle at her and she might cry. The last reason is people would say “you live at a motel”? And ask more questions.
Well, she was just about to say that she lived and worked in a motel when Jason walked in. It then says here that “Jason shot me a ‘don’t you dare’ look” which shows that Mia would’ve said that if Jason hadn’t looked at her like that. So it was Jason that didn’t want her to say that and Mia didn’t want him to do anything to her so she didn’t say it. Later in the book, it says how Jason was bullied and Mia saved him, and she was going to ask how he was but remembered what he had done the previous day. So maybe she considered what he had done as well when Jason gave her that look.
I think Mia didn’t say it because she wanted to fit in but I know she’ll probably come threw sometime and the class won’t care and still be their friends.

I think why Mia did not want to tell the class about the motel is because I think she was afraid of the class not liking her, or laughing at her because of it. And, I think when Jason came, She was afraid of getting embarrassed that Jason was at the motel too.
I think that the reason that Mia does not tell the class about the fact that she works and lives in a motel is because she saw Jason give her a bad look that meant “ don’t you dare tell them”. So Mia did not tell them because Mr. Yao could fire them and then they would not earn money any more.
She got embarrassed when she tried to talk about living in a motel because Jason walked in the room. So she lied and said something else because she was worried that Jason would get mad and tell Mr. Yao. She was worried that her parents would get in trouble.
I think she didn't share because she thought it was not a “normal” lifestyle. And she might have thought that Jason would tell his father Mr Yao. Or known as the owner of the motel. And that might cause Mia and her family to get fired. That would not turn out well because they would not be earning money. Then they might be able to find more jobs. So she lied about what she did.
Why I think that Mia lied to her teacher Mrs.Douglas about where she lived is because she was worried that other kids would make fun of her and tease her because she doesn't live In a normal house and not In a motel. But she was also worried that if she said that she lived in a normal house that Jason would say that, SHE DOESN'T LIVE IN A NORMAL HOUSE SHE LIVES IN A MOTEL THAT MY DAD MANGES AND SHE HAS TO WORK THERE TO GET PAID AND HER PARENTS DO TOO!! So that's why I think that she didn't say that she worked at a motel.
Before Jason walked in she was going to say something about the motel but she didn’t. She didn’t because when Jason came he looked at her with a weird face like he was saying not to talk about the motel.So she didn’t talk about the motel and she lied.
I think that she doesn’t tell the class because when Jason comes into the class he gives her a look to not tell them about the motel. She might have then lied so he can’t get his dad to make the situation worse for her parents.
Because Jason gave her a look that says “don't you dare” and she was thinking about if that can affect her parents. Another reason could be she didn't want to be laughed at.
People were saying stuff to catch other people's attention, and then would shout out something really weird or gross. Mia wanted to say that she lived --and even worked at a motel, but then Jason (Mr. Yaos’ son) walks in and when the teacher repeats what Mia said. Jason gave her a dirty look and she knew that it meant to stop talking, and she stopped talking.

ReplyDeleteShe was going to tell the class that sh lives and works in a motel but right then Jason walked into the classroom so she only got to get to I live and work in a Jason sat down next to her because it was the only spot open in the classroom and that Jason gave a don't you dare look at Mia and then Mia lied to the class and she said that she lived and worked with a golden retriver and she said that because that was the first dog to pop into her mind she said it was golden and its name was Sonjay.

The first reason is that she probably thought that she would have a hard time making friends if she said that. The second reason is that Jason Yao gave her a look that meant don’t you dare tell anyone about that.

When he walked in he had to sit at the only other desk which is right next to her desk. Then he gave her the “don’t you dare stare” so then she lied and said she had a dog. Another reason is that a lot of the people at her school have nice houses but her family doesn't have the money so they have to live in a motel for free.

Another reason I think she didn’t say it is because Jason might say *she thinks she is good at the job*. One more reason I think she didn’t say it is people would giggle at her and she might cry. The last reason is people would say “you live at a motel”? And ask more questions.
ReplyDeleteWell, she was just about to say that she lived and worked in a motel when Jason walked in. It then says here that “Jason shot me a ‘don’t you dare’ look” which shows that Mia would’ve said that if Jason hadn’t looked at her like that. So it was Jason that didn’t want her to say that and Mia didn’t want him to do anything to her so she didn’t say it. Later in the book, it says how Jason was bullied and Mia saved him, and she was going to ask how he was but remembered what he had done the previous day. So maybe she considered what he had done as well when Jason gave her that look.

But she was also worried that if she said that she lived in a normal house that Jason would say that, SHE DOESN'T LIVE IN A NORMAL HOUSE SHE LIVES IN A MOTEL THAT MY DAD MANGES AND SHE HAS TO WORK THERE TO GET PAID AND HER PARENTS DO TOO!!
